My mic seems to really pic up my laptops fan noise no matter where I place the mic. Besides turning the fan off altogether, does anyone hAve any tips to stop this?

I have a Fujitsu laptop that was setup by Advantage Software.  The audio is recorded through the mics which are internal and at the top of the screen on either side.  Won't solve your current issue, but it's something to think about in the future.  I have definitely been diggin' it.

I feel the same way about my Sony Vaio. Its microphone is internal, so it's even easier than having to lie to attorneys when they ask why I have a microphone and if I'm recording.    -    pwreu 8/15/2012 9:27:30 AM | Flag
Don't you hate that? Before this, I had a very subtle USB mic that looked more like a software key, and they would STILL be like, What's that? Aaack! I had an ortho doc once bug me about it - What's that? Is that USB mic? How does it work? Is it with your software? Can I use it for dictation? DUDE, I will help you AFTER the other cats have left the room, yo! STOP. Ugh...    -    dunbarcsr 8/17/2012 1:22:53 PM | Flag

Maybe your microphone is too sensitive?  My laptop fan goes off an on throughout depositions, but it's very low in the background; even if I place my mic right next to it.  My microphone was a tad bit expensive, but it's the best one I've used thus far.

Here's the link for it:

I also have the tripod for it, which is helpful so it can stand up on its own.

If it's a USB mic, buy a USB extender cable, cheap fix.  You can get it online or at any computer store or office supply store.  It will take the microphone a foot or more away from your laptop.  Also, if you have a choice as to where to put the mic on your laptop, put it in a USB on the other side of the fan exhaust.

I place my laptop on the small portable table I carry in my roller bag,  Cool Table by Stenograph.  That way my USB mic is on the conference table, away from the laptop.  Also frees up valuable table space for exhibits, notepad, etc., while still having the laptop close at hand.
