How long is too long to wait for pay?

My first depo I took was April 30, 2012. I didn't receive my first paycheck until August 3, 2012. Is this too long to be waiting to get paid from an agency? This is how my agency has their pay period schedule:

CUT OFF IS EVERY 10TH AND 25TH OF THE MONTH. - IT IS 85 DAYS AFTERWARDS (WHEN WE GET PAID BY THE INSURANCE COMPANIES) THAT YOU WILL BE PAID.....SO HERE IS A BREAKDOWN OF THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS.

MARCH 10TH CUT OFF (PAY PERIOD WOULD BE 2/26-3/10)=5/31 PAYDAY
MARCH 25TH CUT OFF (PAY PERIOD WOULD BE 3/11-3/25)=6/15 PAYDAY
APRIL 10TH CUT OFF    ("                                      3/26-4/10=6/30 PAYDAY
APRIL 25TH                   ( "                                     4/11-4/25=7/15 PAYDAY

AND SO ON

Is this too long to be waiting? I just want to get some feedback, since I am a new reporter.

I personally think, from my experience, that that is too long to get paid from an agency.  I myself work for agencies that pay me every other week, and that's been the only experience I've had with agencies in New York.

Maybe where you live that might be the norm?  Are you working for a nationwide agency?  Sometimes the big agencies take longer to pay, I hear.  But waiting 85 days for a pay check seems rather lengthy to me.  How can you pay your bills if you're waiting months for a pay check?

What do others think about this?

We have the same issues here in Georgia. Successful CR firms are here as well that string reporters along and keep them hopping from one job to the next and then get angry if the reporters ask simple questions regarding the time frame to expect payment for completed jobs. Unbelievable how unprofessional that is. I often wonder why we as reporters have no protection for payment from firms so we don't starve while they live high on the hog with our money!!    -    Reporter64 8/11/2012 6:48:05 PM | Flag

There's an agency located in Brooklyn, NY, who used to take about six weeks to pay its reporters. I found it rather odd considering the amount of volume this agency had, and I wondered aloud why the owner would wait so long when we all knew she had the funds to pay. Daringly, I asked her once when contemplating picking up work from them, and she explained that it was to the reporter's benefit to have such a delay. Dumbfounded, I asked her how on Earth that could possibly be, and she hissed, "Well, you'll have a steady income once you start working for me on a regular basis, and if you ever leave my agency, you'll continue to receive checks for the next six weeks. Consider it severance pay."

Some people are crooks and/or horrible businesspeople. She's one of them. Sounds to me like you're potentially getting strung along by someone just like that if it's taking that long to get a check.

I think I know which agency you're referring to, and if that's the case, she is a horrible business owner. I've had a bad experience with her myself, and she doesn't pay her reporters enough for the amount of B.S. they encounter.I believe businesses, especially if they have a fair amount of work, should definitely have the funds to pay you in a timely fashion. Why they choose to pay reporters anything more than every other week is beyond me, and I feel it's a scam and another way to screw you over somehow.    -    KRORPERNYC 8/7/2012 10:42:30 AM | Flag
We're clearly thinking about the same place. I'd take the time to rant about what an ignorant businesswoman she is, but it's not worth the time. Besides, the more money she rips off her reporters, the more money she can spend bleaching her ratty, stringy hair and squeezing herself into her daughter's clothes like she's one of the tramps who work for her.    -    pwreu 8/7/2012 3:29:09 PM | Flag
Okay, we're DEFINITELY thinking of the same place! Haha. You're too funny!    -    KRORPERNYC 8/7/2012 6:02:03 PM | Flag

pwreu, the names you use for women you don't like are uncalled for. I took note of your steno outline in your most recent post referring to a woman you took a job for, and although I felt it was disgusting, I chose to overlook it, which I should not have. Venting is one thing, but filthy references to women is another.    -    pinksteno 8/11/2012 9:52:17 AM | Flag
Well, all I can do at this point is apologize if you find it offensive. My intention certainly is not to make anyone feel uncomfortable, just sore after laughing uncontrolably. Of course, I agree that the names are uncalled for, but sometimes there's no other word to accurately describe my feeling. Yes, my vocabulary is extensive, but again, sometimes it just stares you in the face as the most obvious choice. (Glad you read steno, because I would NEVER have written it in English). Oh, I've been called worse in my life. Again, just venting. I'll go put a nickel in the swear jar ;-)    -    pwreu 8/11/2012 10:00:26 AM | Flag
