Attorneys asking for opinions

I've only been reporting a little over a year and several times now I have attorneys turn to me after the depo or case and ask my opinion on how it went or what I thought.

What is a good impartial answer that you more experienced CRs give? Especially when it's the ordering attorney.

Keep your answers unbiased as to your personal opinions on the case.  You can tell the attorney that he/she spoke well and concisely and thank them for the spell outs, if they did this, of course.  An attorney I have worked for will give me his/her opinion about what kind of case it is and their opinions of the demeanor of the deponent, but my replies are always, "oh, really?  Wow, that's interesting."  Keep it unbiased, always.

Exactly. One attorney I work for a lot always likes to tell me what he thought of the witness and their case afterwards while I'm packing up, and I find myself doing a lot of Hmm. Uh-huh. Oh, wow. I think once he asked me something like did you believe her at all, and I found myself really struggling to answer him without giving my personal opinion. Something along the lines of, well, you never know what a jury might think.    -    ebeths 7/20/2012 9:45:07 AM | Flag

I usually tell an attorney I don't know that well, "Oh, you don't want my opinion. I'm just a lowly reporter and I'm impartial."

Then I look in both directions to make sure no one else is around and tell them I think they're doing a horrible job defending their case because their questions don't make sense.

Hey, they asked... ;-)
