8/24/2011 5:52:06 PM Does anyone know a good online backup program? I mean the kind that backs up for you and stores your files with their system. I have two external hard drives, but I was thinking if there was ever a fire or flood, that it might be a good idea to have something offsite. TIA |

I have Carbonite, but it only backs up files that you keep on your computer. What about something that stores your files off site even after you've deleted it from your computer?? |

fyi, my 87,000 master dictionary is only 2.84 mb so lots of room to store your files since the files are text files and are usually small!! |

I back up to two external drives using Second Copy (www.secondcopy.com), and I use Carbonite. My main computer is a desktop. Currently I am using 214 GB. 716 GB are free. I delete nothing except crap. I have all work from 1999, including audiosynch and digital recorder audio, scads of pictures (22,656 to be exact thanks to Windows Explorer in W7), and tons of music. It is totally irrelevant to me that Carbonite only backs up only what's on my desktop computer because I have no reason to delete stuff. My secondary work computer is a laptop, of course, which I don't use as a storage computer although I certainly could. |

Here is straight from Carbonite's site for anyone having a question about their deletion policies. Basically, they delete the files after 30 days after the files are deleted off your computer. Hope this helps.
Lisa Retention of Deleted Files
About Carbonite's Retention of Deleted Files We currently keep files deleted from your computer for 30 days after they are removed from your computer. After that, we will remove any files that are no longer on your computer from our servers. For example, if you delete a file on December 1st, you have until December 30th before that file will be permanently removed from the Carbonite servers. 30 days is the standard amount of time if you delete a file from your machine. Note: If you have a Carbonite product that supports external hard drives, unplugging the external hard drive would be considered the same as deleting the files from your computer and the 30 day counter would start. If you want us to remove a file from our servers sooner, you can easily do so. First, locate the file(s) on your computer. Once located right-click the file and select Carbonite; Don't back this up (for Macs click here to find out how to remove files with the Carbonite Preference pane). After the file has been unselected, it will be removed from our servers within 72 hours. You can always select it again during or after the 72 hour period. You will have 30 days to restore a file after it has been deleted from your computer (if on a free trial, you have until 15 days after the trial expires). To restore a recently deleted file please use one of links below: |

Any input on what service you decided to go with? I am also looking for a new back up/storage service. I've been using Mozy, which works fine, but I want to be able to backup an external hard drive and I'd also like to be able to remove files from my computer once they've been backed up. |

| Jon Dawson I`ve been using Mozy. Everything is backed up automatically at a time that you specify. You choose which folders. Carbonite is another one. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Dawn Hillier Carbonite rocks!! Inexpensive and does the automatics!! LOVE IT!! Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Jan Bickford But I would definitely need a program that kept everything even after it was deleted from my computer. Carbonite does not? Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Barbara Mastroddi-Lackey @Jan: good question. I was using a Carbonite backup (via my internet provider) until recently, but am looking into a portable backup as well. (Silly question to ask, but want to be sure I`m not wasting my time/money on the wrong system.) Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Dawn Whitmarsh I use Carbonite. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Linda Vellecca you might want to try dropbox Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Jan Bickford Does Carbonite keep files that are deleted from your computer? I was told they do not and I have a netbook so I back things off my computer regularly. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Valerie Almand I use Carbonite, but I don`t know about the issue of it keeping files deleted off your computer. I also, besides Carbonite, have an external hard drive to which I back up my completed files with audio. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Janet Ponther Hughes I doubt Carbonite keeps deleted files as it is updated throughout the day. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Christine Jordan I recently subscribed to Carbonite and it does not keep deleted files. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Jon Dawson Please let us know what you end up going with and the reasons for doing so. It may be time to reassess. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Anne Bryant I, too, wanted a program that I can store stuff on, but that doesn`t automatically delete files that I have deleted from my computer, when cleaning it off. I decided on SugarSync. It, like Carbonite and many of the other programs out there, does delete files that it no longer detects on your computer. However, it also has a feature called Magic Briefcase, I believe it is, which allows you to manually back up files, and it doesn`t delete those files if they are no longer on your computer. | Sandi Walker I had trouble with my computer after using Carbonite. Now I just prefer using two backups kept at different locations. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Evangeline Langston Dropbox keeps all files even after you delete them and updates any time you change a file as long as you`re connected to the internet. If you`re not connected, as soon as you get a signal, it updates everything. You get so much free space then pay for it if you use up all the free space. I have not used all of my free space yet, and I`ve had it for going on two years. Thursday, August 25, 2011 | ||
| Jon Dawson I just may switch to Crashplan after reading this article. Scroll down to the comments, too. http://goo.gl/LBzkP Friday, August 26, 2011 | ||
| Jon Dawson Okay. So I`ve officially made the switch to CrashPlan. Backing up locally as we speak. Six and a half hours left for that. Who knows how long it`ll take to backup to the cloud. Days, I`m` sue. :) Friday, August 26, 2011 | ||
