Certification for court reporters?

I've been thinking about becoming a court reporter and have seen reference to certification. Is it really necessary?

Certification for court reporters is a process that helps to ensure that we all are providing a quality service. Certification shows that court reporters have had the education that they need to perform services at a consistent, competent level.
